'The Red Dress' by Elizabeth Polunin
Elizabeth Violet Hart 1887- 1950, was the English wife of the Russian painter Vladimir Polunin. They married in 1907 and came to London becoming the principle designers for Diaghilev's - Ballet Russes - considered the 20th centuries most influential ballet company. In 1917 they were joined by Picaso and began a friendship, working jointly on productions for several years. In 'The Red Dress' circa 1920's, Polunin makes use of thick paint, contrasting with skilful use of the bare canvas, to make this rich strong image.
