Sir William MacTaggart
Wonderful double sided oil on canvas 25.5” x 29” by Sir William MacTaggart (1903 - 1981). The landscape suggests an early work, perhaps when MacTaggart first painted in France in the 1920’s and declared “We are all children of Cezanne…” . The reverse still life, suggests a period before 1952, when MacTaggart saw an exhibition by French artist Georges Roulault - who's style greatly influenced his subsequent painting. MacTaggert taught at Edinburgh Collage of Art; was made president of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1959. His works are held numerous Scottish collections, plus Tate Britton.
