Jo Jones 'Boys of Sacromonte'
Violet Madeline Josette Jones 1894 -1989. A remarkable painter who won prizes as a child, went to Jamaica, Zurich, Paris and studied at the Slade under Sickert and Augustus John. She had a studio in London and a home in Dorset. Her work can be divided into four periods - from the 1930’s (when she was taken up by the Wildenstein Gallery in Paris), through to her death at Long Bredy in 1989. ‘Boys of Sacromonte’ oil on board, is from the 1950’s when Jones lived among the Sacromonte Gypsies in the caves around Granada. Size: 29” x 38”. Provenance sold by Agnews London in 1990.
